Salwa Ali

Muttering profanities under her breath, Amy clutched the yoke of her biplane and charged it towards a billow of snowy white clouds. Jason, her trusted companion in this tedious and strenuous journey, shuddered as it travelled through the pearly haze that threatened to conceal the view beneath. Amy had set off for this perilous flight at daybreak and after a few exhausting hours, she could finally notice the azure skies beginning to stain with oblivion. The unstable route she had taken to complete this journey had taken its toll on Amy who dazedly fought against her subconscious to stay awake, reciting nursery rhymes. She was drunk with fatigue, parched and starved.

Kingsbury High Creative Writers Flying High

The Brent Women of Renown Project are in partnership with Kingsbury High School and the team were out during summer term 2023 delivering school assemblies and workshops to lower school as well as creative writing and oral history to sixth form students. Dr Midge Gillies facilitated the oral history and creative writing workshop with the students at the RAF Museum, Hendon.

Here we have selected three students excerpts of their brilliant creative imagination of Amy Johnson’s flights.

Party for the Pioneer, Dame Stephanie Shirley

Dame Stephanie Shirley has just celebrated her 90th birthday and the Brent Women of Renown project team salute her on this joyous occasion. In her words “I’ve done more in the eight decades since that miserable day when my mother put me on a train, than I would ever have believed possible. I decided to make my life one that had been worth saving…. And then just got on with it.”

The Brent school children we have worked with are in awe of Dame Stephanie for many facets of her life.

BRENT WOMEN OF RENOWN PROJECT 2023

The Cricklewood Town Team (CTT), a group of volunteers representing the local community who work to improve the area for residents and business, has been awarded a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £78,000 to celebrate the life and achievements of three Brent Women of Renown who overcame adversity and prejudice to change the world for the better. Cricklewood has an interesting history over the past 150 years and CTT and local residents’ associations receive very positive feedback to all the heritage work that has been achieved, particularly at Cricklewood station.
