Brent Women of Renown Premiere

Brent Women of Renown: Pioneers in Politics and STEM is a heritage funded short documentary film by Angela Payne and Amanda Epe which highlights the lives of the imprisoned Suffragette Violet Doudney, pioneer engineer and aviator Amy Johnson CBE and child refugee on the Kindertransport to pioneer computer engineer and philanthropist Dame Stephanie Shirley CH. The film documents the lives of these pioneers, the workshops delivered in Brent Schools by project lead and film director Amanda Epe and Amanda Beasley and features interviews with Dame Stephanie, Dr Midge Gillies – Amy Johnson’s biographer and Maggie Toy, the granddaughter of the Suffragette Violet Doudney.

From Protests to Pictures


Kilburn was one of the hotbed spots for the Suffragettes movement. It was here that Violet Doudney a key suffragette trained as a teacher and organised protests rallies.  The National Lottery Funded “Brent Women of Renown” project shared Violet’s story, Amy Johnson Aviation and Engineer achievements and Dame Stephanie Shirley’s inspirational life to students in Brent schools throughout 2023 to take inspiration from their lives, develop research skills and aid their learning amongst other curriculum related topics.  In a month’s time we premiere the documentary about the “Brent Women of Renown” at The Kiln Cinema, Kilburn. Bringing to the pictures an interview with the formidable philanthropist Dame Stephanie, Dr Midge Gillies biographer of Amy Johnson and Maggie Toy the granddaughter of Violet Doudney. This empowering short film covers school workshops and the older community forum discussing the pioneering women, heritage and overcoming discrimination.

Amy Johnson, the pioneering aviator, gripped the control stick as her beloved de Havilland Gipsy Moth fought against the relentless fury of the sandstorm. Her goggles were coated with a fine layer of grit, her once clear view now obscured by the swirling chaos outside. The wind buffeted the tiny aircraft, threatening to cast it aside like a leaf in a tempest.

 It had all started as a typical flight, a routine journey across the vast and desolate landscape. Amy’s adventurous spirit had always been drawn to the challenge of flying in unpredictable conditions, but this sandstorm was like nothing she had ever encountered before. The desert roared with fury, its dunes rising and falling like the tumultuous waves of a turbulent sea.

In the confines of the cockpit, Amy’s heart pounded in sync with the engine’s roar. She knew she had to maintain her composure; panic was a luxury she couldn’t afford. Her eyes darted around the instrument panel, trying to read the gauges amidst the rattling vibrations. She needed to know that her beloved Gipsy Moth was still holding up against the onslaught.

Muttering profanities under her breath, Amy clutched the yoke of her biplane and charged it towards a billow of snowy white clouds.

I couldn’t believe it, I was actually in control of the yoke, I was speechless, it was a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to fly a plane and to be honest even though it was so hard to get a hold of one. I always knew I was capable of doing it and that I would accomplish it one day but I just didn’t know that day was today, that day was here. I am finally doing the one thing I desired. My heart was racing just sitting in the seat having my hands on the yoke ready to fly. I had butterflies in my stomach. I was so excited that I almost forgot where I was going. Just sitting on the plane knowing I have full control, already brought out this happiness inside of me I never knew I was capable of. As I was flying the plane, the rain started to hit hard and heavily onto the earth. As much as I was afraid of what would happen, I had faith and I was standing strong knowing it was all going to be okay in the end. I will get to my destination safe and sound. The sky was dull and grey but the smile I had on my face honestly brightened the view for me. The more I was flying in the sky, with the dark grey clouds surrounding me and Jason, I could smell the musky, fresh air, it was getting stronger as I was driving further into the sky. As I was flying the plane, I was thinking about how strong and brave I truly am as I know many women in my position would have never thought of flying a plane, let alone fly a plane through a monsoon.
